WOMEN'S RUGBY FACTS

Rugby can be a touch confusing at the best of times. Learn something new about women’s rugby with our ten women’s rugby facts! 

1. Emily Valentine was the first ever recorded female to play rugby. She was 10 years old at the time and stepped in to help her brothers when their team were a man down. She played on the wing and managed to score a try in the match. 

2. Although many people assume rugby players are professional, most female players balance a full-time job alongside playing demands. Contracts are slowly being introduced to many clubs in England, but still don’t provide a full-time salary.

3. The first Women’s World Cup was held in 1991 in Cardiff, Wales. Four players from Richmond rugby club created and organised this, although a competition known as the ‘mini World Cup’ was held in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1990. 

4. This year’s final of the Women’s Six Nations was broadcast live on BBC2 and saw a peak figure of 600,000 viewers tune in to a tense game between England and France. 

5. Contrary to popular opinion, most female rugby players don’t mind being subject to criticism, as long as it is rooted in skill – and not about the players’ gender. 

6. New Zealand tried to hold a women’s tour in 1891 and was forced to cancel due to public backlash to women playing rugby.

7. Edinburgh University formed the first women’s rugby team in 1962.

8. Women’s rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. 

9. The first fully documented and recorded women’s club match was held on the 1st of May 1968 in France.

10. Women’s rugby is the best sport on earth. Okay fine this isn’t a fact, but we think it should be 😉
