W6N ROUND 3 RECAP

Elizabeth Cartwright

Round 3 saw France thrash Ireland to record a win and book their place in the final against England. The French beat the Irish 56-13 to top pool B. Ireland will now play for third/fourth spot against Italy after the Azzurre beat Scotland convincingly with a 41-20 victory. This means Scotland will now play Wales in the fight for fifth spot in what promises to be a fantastic day of rugby for all.

Ireland 15 - 56 France

The French outfit scored eight tries against Ireland in a thrilling contest at the Energia Park. Winger Boujard followed her hat-trick in Round 1 with a try double at Energia Park, while her back-three teammates Emilie Boulard and Cyrielle Banet also crossed in what some would call a thrilling first-half. Safi N’Diaye’s close-range finish and a penalty try meant victory was all but secured by half-time, before Romane Menager and Banet again added further tries after half time. The Irish put out the same team that beat Wales last weekend but it wasn’t to be for them this weekend and the French proved too strong. However, Ireland began the game well, and when a fantastic push by the pack got France pinged for not rolling away, Hannah Tyrrell slotted the kick between the posts. Ireland found some success through their forward line, with Cliodhna Moloney diving over from a maul shortly after. There was time for a late Irish consolation in the second half, Emma Hooban going over to narrow the final deficit.

Scotland 20 - 41 Italy

Italy produced a stunning performance against Scotland on Saturday and came away from Scotstoun with a convincing win. Italian Captain, Manuela Furlan scored a hat-trick of tries as the Azzurre saw off the depleted Scots, 41-20 and secured second place in their table for Pool A. The Italians scored two tries within the first ten minutes through Beatrice Rigoni and Furlan. Their experienced backline was falling into place and they found plenty of holes in the Scottish defence at every given opportunity. However, it wasn’t all plain sailing for the French and after some early scrum troubles, Lana Skeldon dived over from a powerful rolling maul. Another penalty kicked by Helen Nelson allowed the Scots to only trail by two before the break but on the stroke of half time, the Italians scored once again and Italy lead 19-10 at half time. Vittoria Ostuni Minuzzi’s try early in the second half secured the bonus point for Italy with Furlan getting her second just before the hour-mark. Rigoni completed her double and despite Emma Wassell’s late score, it was Furlan who scored her hat-trick.
